Hurricane Audrey made landfall on the Louisiana–Texas border on June 27, 1957, as a Category 4. Southwest Louisiana's Cameron Parish was devastated. Surge moved miles inland across flat marsh country. People who had weathered weaker storms before underestimated the water.
Early Season Complacency
June hurricanes are psychologically disarming. Audrey killed about 550 people — one of the highest U.S. hurricane death tolls of the mid-20th century. It helped push the Weather Bureau toward more aggressive hurricane advisories and public education.
Parish-Level Extinction Event
Cameron Parish demography changed forever. Homes were not just damaged — entire communities vanished. Audrey is why Gulf Coast old-timers say 'it only takes one' regardless of seasonal forecasts.
