Hurricane Isaac has caused the levee at Port Louis/Guste Island  to break prompting St. Tammany Parish officials to start search and rescue operations.

Officials said that 10 to 11 inches of water is reported in some streets and that 56,000 homes are without power.

At 1 p.m., the center of Isaac was estimated by NOAA Doppler radar to be about 45 miles southwest of New Orleans and 55 miles south southeast of Baton Rouge. Isaac was moving towards the northwest at 6 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight.

The storm continues to cover a broad area, with a 70 mph wind gust recently reported at Gulfport, Miss.
