A volcano has erupted in northern Indonesia, spewing smoke and ash and causing muddy rain to fall in nearby villages.

Mount Lokon in northern Sulawesi province erupted yesterday afternoon as heavy rain fell around its cloud-covered crater.

Local monitoring officer Farid Ruskanda Bina says the eruption was heard five kilometres away but the height of the eruption was not visible.

It's the second eruption in two months.

An eruption in 1991 killed a Swiss hiker and forced thousands to flee.
