Its shake, rattle and drill time again. Great Shakeout, the national earthquake drill, takes place Oct. 18.
The College of Charleston, among other local institutions, is taking part.
Starting at 10:18 a.m., students, faculty and staff will be asked to drop, cover and hold for one minute. That means finding a relatively secure spot like under a sturdy desk or against an interior wall, and hanging on through an imagined temblor.
The college also holds public talks on earthquake risk at 6 p.m. Oct. 17 and at 4 p.m. Oct. 18, in room 128 of the New Science Center Building on Calhoun Street.
Walking earthquake tours will be held starting from the center atrium at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 17 and 5 p.m. Oct. 18.
The Lowcountry is at risk for damaging earthquakes. In 1886, a massive quake killed about 100 people and caused massive destruction.
